#15. Why the emphasis on a review of the literature as part of a root cause analysis?
There are basically four reasons that dictate your performing appropriate reviews of pertinent literature as part of your root cause analysis:
Identify standards of care, or other standards which have application to the adverse event or circumstance under analysis.
Benefit from "Lessons Learned" by other healthcare organizations in similar circumstances.
Identify alternative corrective actions or practices that have been published elsewhere.
Convince the JCAHO have you have done the above four, to increase the confidence that your root cause analysis has been "thorough and credible."
